Article history: Received 28 May 2012 Accepted 23 June 2012 Available online 7 August 2012 This paper presents a vision for applying the Watson technology to health care and describes the steps needed to adapt and improve performance in a new domain. Specifically, it elaborates upon a vision for an evidence-based clinical decision support system, based on the DeepQA technology, that affords exploration of a broad range of hypotheses and their associated evidence, as well as uncovers missing information that can be used in mixed-initiative dialog. It describes the research challenges, the adaptation approach, and finally reports results on the first steps we have taken toward this goal. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Using Syntactic and Semantic Structural Kernels for Classifying Definition Questions in Jeopardy!

The last decade has seen many interesting applications of Question Answering (QA) technology. The Jeopardy! quiz show is certainly one of the most fascinating, from the viewpoints of both its broad domain and the complexity of its language. In this paper, we study kernel methods applied to syntactic/semantic structures for accurate classification of Jeopardy! definition questions. Our extensive...

Introduction to B This is Watson

In 2007, IBM Research took on the grand challenge of building a computer system that could compete with champions at the game of Jeopardy!i. In 2011, the open-domain question-answering (QA) system, dubbed Watson, beat the two highest ranked players in a nationally televised two-game Jeopardy! match. This paper provides a brief history of the events and ideas that positioned our team to take on ...

On Deep Computational Formalization of Natural Language

Current AI and NLP operate on fragments of natural language and within specific application domains. Even the most successful AI/NLP system in existence today, IBM’s Watson, is highly limited when it comes to simple language processing just beyond its ken. In order to paralyze (at least the Jeopardy!-winning version of) Watson, one has only to ask it questions that have never been asked before,...

In the game: The interface between Watson and Jeopardy!

To play as a contestant in Jeopardy!i, IBM Watsoni needed an interface program to handle the communications between the Jeopardy! computers that operate the game and its own components: question answering, game strategy, speech, buzzer, etc. Because Watson cannot hear or see, when the categories and clues were displayed on the game board, they were also sent electronically to Watson. The progra...

Eric Brown and Watson take on Jeopardy! challenge Q uestion Answering (QA) has been an active area of research for several decades. Instead of retrieving whole web pages in response to keyword queries, as is typical for web search engines, a QA system retrieves answers to questions. Eric Brown (Ph.D. '96) has been involved in QA since 1999, when he developed a custom search engine at the IBM T....
